This building was an 800 square foot garage in its former life. It had low ceilings and no windows.
Our client, a painter, asked us to evaluate the structure after purchasing the garage and adjacent Victorian farmhouse.
We created a day-lit and generously scaled painting studio. The rafter ties were removed and a ridge beam installed to open up the volume under the roof. Two garage doors were filled in. New doors opening toward the farmhouse allowed us to make a sheltered patio between the two buildings. New windows provided views to the meadow to the west, making what was once an introverted structure connect to its larger context. The walls were insulated and finished and a raised plywood floor was installed to provide a comfortable work surface.
Color is provided by the landscape, the shifting character of the light through the days and seasons, and by the artwork itself.
