South Orange Public Library
ONGOING
LOCATION
AREA
In 1968 the South Orange Public Library moved into a purpose built building, abandoning their original historic 19th century library, located just fifty feet away. Fifty-five years after this move, we were asked to design a new, contemporary and flexible library that includes these two separate buildings. The renovation of the two buildings, and a new structure sited between them, will double the size of the Village’s library to 32,000 square feet.
The newly expanded and reimagined library will be a civic structure in the heart of the Village. A place for people of all ages, backgrounds, and needs. A common public space and a destination for the community and region.
The new library will be accessible and welcoming. It will have spaces allowing for expanded programming. It will offer its patrons a range of spaces; shared and personal, collaborative and active, as well as quiet and focused. Facilities for children and teens will be greatly expanded and enhanced. A flexible Community Room, a Village Archives, and a revitalized landscape with exterior seating will complement the public library’s offerings.
